VECCI Women's Networking Event

Last night attended the VECCI's Women's Networking Event. Held at Zinc, Federation Square, this event had a really relaxed, friendly buzz. Being a cocktail style event, we were greeted with a glass of wine and really delicious finger foods. Informal networking took place until we were seated (each set having a gorgeous yellow rose on it...) and our speakers began. The MC for the evening, Bindi Gove, Industrial Development Manager Tourism and Events VECCI, was fantastic, warm, inviting and funny. Speakers were exceptional, Liza Boston from Cracked Pepper Communications and Sharon Pearson from The Coaching Institute.

A lot of corporate women attend this event who are working in industry, great mix of ages and job roles - over 100 women in attendance.

Lots of really great door prizes and great gift bags!

Mums In Business Networking Event

On Wednesday morning I attended the Mums in Business 'Melbourne Business Building Session' at the Matthew Flinders Hotel in Chadstone. At a 9:30am time lot, that would most certainluy suit 'mums' (after dropping kids off at school), we grabbed a coffee, introduced ourselves to each other and found out seats. Lorraine Pirihi, Australia's No. 1 Productivity Coach gave us some really useful strategies and tips on how to 'organise' both our professional and personal lives better. We then took a 'networking' break, and finished the session off with feedback and questions. A great event to make new connections and learn something at the same time.

So, Mums in Business networking sessions not only allow you to see what Mums in Business is all about, but also you are able to take time to talk to other mums in business, network with women, listen to a fantastic and inspirational speaker who shares their business knowledge with you...and you have the opportunity to win some prizes!

Pitch Club - Tuesday 26th February

Described in the advertising blurb as "an evening of fun, action, participation and networking ", in my view this event certainly lived up to expectations.
We were thrilled to see our very own Networking World Alliance Partner Peter Djurovich extremely well represented in the Pitching Ring by his son Ryan. Ryan was a late entry in the pitch so was completely unprepared but despite that ended up in the top 4. Well done Ryan!. To find out more about what Ryan and Peter were pitching visit http://www.globaltravelproducts.com.au/ .

So what is Pitch Club?
Basically 10 selected ventures get 90 seconds to pitch and impress the audience on their business venture. Typically with a view to attracting the interest of investors. The crowd is then invited to vote and comment in syndicates.

Here's where the networking opportunities arise. Very cleverly we were made to move in order to form new groups so that we could have our say in the vote.

After the scores were tallied the top 4 entrepreneurs were invited back for 4 more minutes of fame. Then a final winner was selected.

The evening was MC'd by James Tuckerman, Editor-in-Chief Australian Anthill Magazine.

Only one complaint Pitch Club Team Where were the women pitchers?????

We suggest you watch out for more Pitch Club events. How can you be sure to find out about them? Business Mum's Network

This morning I presented a seminar on networking at a Business Mum's Workshop. The event was attended by about 15 business owners and half a dozen pre-school children. For those of you wondering the children were fantastically well behaved and certainly not a distraction from my presentation. For home based business owners struggling with the isolation of working from home and caring for small children Business Mums Network a unique and invaluable resource to enable you to get out, meet other business owners in the same situation as yourself and get valuable information at the same time. BSI - Business Strategies International

Last night I attended a seminar on How to Access Government Grants presented by BSI. This was a free seminar and I found out things I certainly never knew about Government grants.
Emphasis was on Research and Development and Export Grants. Most of the people in the room where there because they had some sort of interest in accessing Government funds - coming from a wide variety of businesses and industry.
How frustrating for the people in the room who realised they may have missed out on thousands of dollars because they didn't have the facts before they made critical business decisions. It definitely pays to get the right advice.
Not strictly speaking a "Networking" event but certainly a valuable networking opportunity. Also a great place to pick up useful information. A venue to watch out for.
I'll give a full report on BSI networking events in next week's Where in the World is Networking World (WITWIN).

Whitehorse Business Group Speed Networking

Had a fabulous networking experience on Thursday night at the Whitehorse Business Group Speed Networking Event. If you haven't experienced Speed Networking yet I strongly recommend you give it a try. High energy, lots of fun and an opportunity to meet a lot of people in a short time.
Three problems people tell me they experience with more traditional networking - all overcome with speed networking.
1. How do I break into a group when I don't know anyone - you don't have to each new conversation comes to you.
2. Don't like doing my sales pitch !- forget that one - everyone is doing it and as fast as they can -just ask questions and listen and you will hardly have to talk at all. Meet someone you want to follow up with? Just get their card and give them a call afterwards to reminisce on the experience.
3. How do you get out of a conversation when it is going nowhere? - Definitely NOT a problem at speed networking. Time is at a premium and before you know it the boring person has moved on and you are talking to someone new.
Many councils and other business support organsations run speed networking events. Watch out for the next one and give it a try.

11 February 2008 MCEI Chinese New Year

Last night I celebrated Chinese New Year at the Formosa restaurant in Nunawading with MCEI (Marketing and Communication Executives International). The speaker was Bev Ryan founder and editor of "Honestly Woman" who was the winner of last year's MCEI Women in Business award. It was facinating to hear the story of how Bev gathered a team of women - many of whom had never sailed before - and took part in the 2007 Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race. AND won their division.
Why did they do it? Networking at its best - a real WIN-WIN-WIN, and those of you who know me will know how obsessive I am about the 3 WINs triangle. The plan was to raise publicity for the launch of Bev's new magazine, and raise awareness for Redkite, the charity for children with cancer. The third WIN - definitely a WIN for clients of both Redkite, some of the children and their families got involved with the race, and clients of Honestly Woman a number of whom sponsored the race. Two of them actually got to go along for the ride!.
Want to know more about MCEI? You can visit their website at http://www.mcei.org.au/ or check out the Where in the World is Networking World review on Thursday at http://www.networkingworld.net.au/ . NetworkingWorld provides a review of different networking groups each week.
